Shoulder injury (possibly rotator cuff??)?

Melissa Asked: Shoulder injury (possibly rotator cuff??)?

A while ago, I was performing lat pulldowns behind the neck, and felt a pinch. Further into the workout my arm started getting sore, but I kept going, because I had never been injured in the gym before. My shoulder continued to be sore for a week or so, until I decided to throw a stick for my dog. Later that night, my shoulder KILLED!!! My whole upper arm hurt, and there was no position for me to put my arm in to relieve the pain. I took some ibuprofen, and took a month away from the gym to heal. I don't believe that it ever fully recovered, because now, over half a year later, i still have shoulder pain. I have never done a heavy shoulder workout since I injured myself, and have recently started light lateral flies, and the occasional game of catch to try and whip my shoulder back into shape, but i'm still in pain. I'm not new to the gym, I built myself up pretty well, so i was shocked that I got injured. Sometimes the pain is in my shoulder, sometimes it seems like it's coming from my brachialis. I have a pretty good range of motion, however, when I rotate my arm in a counter clockwise circle, i do experience some pinching/popping/pain in the upper half of the rotation. I also cannot bench heavy anymore because I can feel the pain in my shoulder.

SO, my question would be, Which muscle did I most likely injure, and what way(s) if possible, could I rehab it myself. I don't have money for the doctor, so home remedies/exercises/stretches are best. Also if someone knows, what went wrong, why/how did I get injured.

Again, I'm only ASSUMING it's my rotator cuff. It may not be, because I feel the pain near my brachialis also. Any and all information will be greatly appreciated. I've done an extensive amount of research on lifting, dieting, arthrokinematics, etc, so I should be able to handle specific and scientific terms. I just can't go to the doctor for a diagnosis and can't do it myself. Again, thank you to anybody who attempts to help me, I appreciate it.

I know perseverance is key in thing kind of thing, but i need some re-assurance first icon razz Work out questions...? Sit ups for example, i do say…20 sit ups 3times a day(i can do about twenty before my abs become a bit sore)will i over time be able to do more, and build muscle? Or is 3 time 20 sit ups not enough to achieve any muscle gain? Oh, and are there any other good exercises for muscle gain in the ab area?

Thanks in advance icon smile Work out questions...?

Good diet/workout regiment for Building muscle while toning out?

Asked: Good diet/workout regiment for Building muscle while toning out?

Toning is no more than building muscle while losing fat. Both of them come together to form a lean, muscular physique.

If you focus on just building muscle, then you'll get bigger but not leaner. If you focus just on losing fat, you won't have that muscle tone that so many people desire.

So you have to approach both separately and not try to tone by doing just one or the other.

But many people I talk with really have no idea how to do it — correctly. They think that lifting light weights for high reps will help them tone.

Wrong.

If you're unsure how to go about toning to get that lean, muscular body you want, here's my simple "toning" equation.

A Loss in Body Fat + A Gain in Lean Muscle = Toning

Both sides of the equation need to be worked on, simulataneously, for any real results to be achieved.

Let's cover each side… A Loss In Body Fat

This is primarily achieved by:

3-4 INTENSE Cardio Sessions of 20-30 minutes per week.

5-6 small, well-balanced meals (each consisting of 50% protein, 40% carbs, 10% fats).

Drink AT LEAST 1 gallon of water a day. You will also FEEL better!

Reduce daily caloric intake by 150-200 calories until you see/feel the results.

Let's cover the next part of the toning equation:

A Gain in Lean Muscle

This is done by…

3-4 INTENSE Weight-training sessions per week. Strive to progressively increase resistance each week.

Keep your rep range lower on heavy sets.

Perform just a few heavy sets per exercise.

Keep workout under 1 hour.

Keep protein intake high. Protein (amino acids) builds muscle.

Shoot for 1.5 to 2 grams per pound of bodyweight.

Consume a high protein/high carb meal or shake right after training.

In closing, in order to tone up properly, you must work on both losing fat and building muscle… at the same time.

And that's done with an approach to:

1. Proper weight training 2. Proper nutrition 3. Proper cardio

Think of a combination lock. In order to open the lock, you must get the three numbers exactly right.

Even if you're off by just one, you do not get what you want. Well, the same is true in building muscle, losing fat, and toning.

You must get weight training, cardio, and nutrition just right or you will not get what you want.

Again, you want to work on both sides equally. If you just focus on dropping fat, you're going to look frail and thin, without any muscle mass.

If you just focus on gaining mass, it could cause you to look bloated and bigger than you want.

Gaining muscle and losing fat can be achieved at the same time. I know, I personally did it for my bodybuilding show and I see it with clients all the time.

Hope this helped.

By the way, this is the same "toning" answer I give to my personal training clients, if you're looking for something more in-depth to follow, you might want to check out my complete program…

Hope I helped.

vegetarian muscle building?

Jennifer L Asked: vegetarian muscle building?

I started being mainly vegetarian about two yrs ago. I still love protein, dont get me wrong. I started just getting to a point where nothing sounds good anymore at all however. At all. Before the vegetarian stage, I was on an extremely limited carb diet for muscle building/toning. That worked fantastically with great energy as a result. Now though, after going through this change from a ton of protein every single day to just fowl and fish protein, but very limited amounts and some days only relying on protein bars, I have no energy. I bike to work every day which round trip is 8 miles and recovery is virtually impossible, I know I have to fix this problem, but I have to feel better to even get started. Hoe do I do this? Please no rude answers and no solicitation. I will junk your link if you try and sell me any product. That being said I am open to suggestions. Thank you in advance.

Does cycling help tighten your ab/stomach muscles?

Krazzy989 Asked: Does cycling help tighten your ab/stomach muscles?

I was wondering does cycling help your ab/stomach muscles?

I lay with my back flat on the ground and mu legs up on the couch.
What I do is arch my back a little like im about to do a sit up, and then I cycle with my legs in the air as if I'm riding a bike, does this help work those stomach muscles?

I really feel it in my stomach and my legs, and only last about a minute long(building stamina!)

If its not, why do I the burn so much? What is it working?

Also, if i don't come all the way up on a sit up, will I still get good results?
I heard you don't have to go all the way up, you can if you want, but it all works the same. So what works the BEST??

Please and thanks with the help

Can A Woman Without Curves Still Be Attractive?

Ralynn Asked: Can A Woman Without Curves Still Be Attractive?

I've always had a very lean and athletic body type that never seems to change no matter what I do. When I work out, I gain weight from the muscle that I build very easily, but it never really shows on the surface. When I gained a lot of weight over the course of my pregnancy with my son, I got proportionately larger but still carried the extra pounds extraordinarily well as if my body were reluctant to change shape. Nobody even realized that I was expecting until I was nearly eight months along. I also have a rather high metabolism so that the only way I can really gain weight is to endlessly shovel junk food into my mouth and refuse to leave the couch, or else it all melts off and I'm returned to "normal".

I'm not complaining about those things at all. I know there are a lot of women out there that would kill to give up rigorous exercise regimens and eat whatever they like without worry, or to weigh as much as a male middleweight boxer and still fit a size 9. But would they still enjoy it as much if it came at the cost of any potential feminine curves?

I basically feel a like a living stick figure. I have no chest to speak of, and absolutely no waist to hip ratio. My hips are slightly more narrow than my shoulders giving me an almost boyish figure, and while I do have a little bit of a booty, it mostly melds into my thighs so that I have some difficulty finding pants that won't sag around the area. Having a body like this probably wouldn't be as bad if I were more petite, but I'm closer to being a muscular Amazonian that forgot to pick up estrogen somewhere along the way. What's worse is that I don't even have a pretty face to focus on. I'm not ugly by any means, but I'm almost painfully generic and average.

I do everything that I can to enhance what curves I do have and draw attention away from what I don't with clothes and accessories, but that only goes so far. Especially since I'm just shy of standing six feet tall without my shoes on which automatically cuts down the number of people that would be interested in dating me because I'm "too big" for them. I know that I should feel happy with having a nice personality since I'm generally well liked and get along with almost everyone I meet, and I've never really had confidence issues or problems talking to people in the past. But guys can't exactly tell that you have a loving disposition by looking at you, and you'll never hear one say that they would like to get their hands on your morals. All the guys that do bother with really getting to know me only want to be friends.

I can deal with being teased for my lack of curves, and even getting mistaken for being a boy occasionally. But it kind of hurts when I go out looking my best and fail to get so much as a second glance of interest. It's been over five years since my ex passed (the only real boyfriend I ever had) and I'm starting to get afraid that I'll always be alone. Is it possible for a woman like me who's just forgetfully "blah" to look at, to be attractive?

I've been muscle buidling for a while. Chest, Legs, Stomach, Arms, Back. etc.

I have realized that only with my left arm I've been seeing bigger gains than my right. My left bicep/tricep are more defined than my right. Why is that? My legs are building muscle quite equally. and i've only been seeing this on my arms.

I'm naturally a right handed person.

insanity and p90x hybrid?

sharkness Asked: insanity and p90x hybrid?

So I've been a dedicated gym rat for a few years now. Though, due to chronic health problems I wouldn't say I've exactly reached my optimal fitness level. I'm benchpressing about 100 pounds now, which I'm told is pretty good for a girl. But today, I tried the fitness test on insanity, I downloaded a hybrid version mixing p90x and insanity (yes illegally, don't judge me). I couldn't even get through the fitness test. I have about 70 days until hawaii and have been trying get ripped for about 3 months, some success. But, I want to take it to the next level for my vacation. I couldn't even finish the fitness test that you have to do before starting insanity (it's a video fitness test that comes with it), am I capable of doing this? Or is this program designed for someone already in really good shape. I'm slowly recovering from chronic fatigue syndrome and had cancer a few years ago. I wouldn't say my overall health is perfect, but I have been dedicated to the gym for quite a while and have built up some muscle. But I'm nothing compared to the people you see in these workout videos lol. Can I do it? Should I just push through it anyways and take breaks when I feel unable to complete something?

Does this sound like a good routine to lose weight?

Rich Asked: Does this sound like a good routine to lose weight?

This would be M/T/W/TH/F (weekdays)

-Wake up, have half banana w/peanut butter
-Run for 1.5 hours (or whenever I hit 1000 calories burned) 30 minutes after waking up
-Eat breakfast after running
-Strength training 1 hour after breakfast on M/W/F (pushups, situps, tricep dips, squats, deadlifts (M/F), bicep curls(M/F))
-PWO protein shake 25g whey protein (1 scoop) w/skim milk

Rest of the day just a light and healthy diet with fiber, flax seed, protein and about 10 cups of water a day (I don't drink anything except milk with breakfast and water for the remainder of the day)

Thoughts? Anything I could change around? I'm a skinny fat male at 5"10 and 170lbs. I want to get to 145-150lbs and still build some muscle. I've been told since I never really lifted much or did much strength training that if I can still build muscle while cutting/losing weight. Is this true?

The website for it is here: http://www.vitaminsforpitbulls.com/index . It says that it prevents bone diseases, improves the immune system and metabolism, builds bone and muscle tissue, improves eye, skin, and coat health, etc. etc. and says that it is healthy in combination with a holistic dog food and daily exercise. But I'm not sure about vitamin supplements even for myself. I don't even take vitamins. Is it safe to give them to my dog? Has anyone ever heard of vitamins for dogs?

Trumpet – should I take a break from practicing?

Scw319 Asked: Trumpet – should I take a break from practicing?

So I'm a freshman in high school, and at the beginning of the year I was put on lead trumpet (a big step from last year, where I played 3rd in my MIDDLE school band). During the year, I feel my "lead trumpet package" (range, endurance, playing loud) has improved quite a lot, no doubt due to the fact that I've been practicing every day this year for 1 hour.

Within the past 2 weeks, I tried to increase my practice time to 2 hours, and immediately started losing lip strength, so I stopped the 2 hour sessions. I still had/have to practice lots of lip exercises, since I have a very mild pressure habit in the high range and need to build lip strength. Now within the past week, I've noticed a HUGE drop in my lip strength, range, endurance, and even tone. Whenever I play now, air escapes out of both corners of my mouth (resulting in crappy tone as a side effect) and am unable to play without pressure like I used to. Basically, my lip strength has reduced drastically.

Could this be due to over practicing? It doesn't really feel like I'm killing my lip muscles, and they're never sore very long after I play, but I have definitely started to lose lots of lip strength. Should I try taking a couple days break from practicing at all? I usually can't go a day without playing or I'm worse the next day, but I am definitely losing lip strength despite me still doing exercises.

Is it good for a 14 year old boy to go to the gym?

Conor Asked: Is it good for a 14 year old boy to go to the gym?

I'm 14, I weigh about 47kg and im around about 5 foot 1 , which is small compared to most of my friends, I go to the gym with my other friend 3 times a week for about 1 hour and a half. I normally dont eat that healthily and I'm trying to now, I am trying to get quite a lot of protein in my diet to help build muscle at the gym and I'm trying to eat more fruit and vegetables. Any help please? I've checked quite a lot of places but I thought that the answers may differ as not all 14 year olds are the same height/weight or as developed as another, some people say that im stopping my growth, others say its a good time to start gym at this age someone please help?

Fast twitch, bulk muscle in punching?

Bald Otter Asked: Fast twitch, bulk muscle in punching?

I used to attend a muay thai class a couple of years ago.

There was this guy that was built like a bodybuilder and was about 250lb (?).
While most guys that look like bodybuilders aren't anywhere near as strong as they look, this guy was.

He wasn't very experienced in MT, but his strikes were like thunderclaps.
One of the skinnier instructors, an ex pro, held the pad for him to practice roundhouses, and the first kick knocked the instructor backwards a good 4 feet.

So I'm curious.
A lot of people say that striking power and muscle have low correlations, and yet this guy was seriously delivering strikes that sounded like thunder. Beyond the sound, they were obviously VERY hard strikes.

So is this guy the exception?

Why isn't muscular strength, the explosive fast twitch kind, the biggest determinant in striking power?

Athletes in many other sports train specifically to generate power by building large, fast twitch muscles.

What are the best machines to use at the gym to loose belly fat and build muscle?

BlondeGirl Asked: What are the best machines to use at the gym to loose belly fat and build muscle?

So so many times I hear this.To build muscle you need to work on "those muscles" and to loose fat you need to burn that fat through "less eating" or "burning up more energy than consumed".
Want to loose fat – stop eating sh1t.
Want to build muscle – work on them.
It really is that simple.
